Minimum Standards for an IPM Pastor

  1. A personal commitment to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord
  2. A lifestyle consistent with Scripture
  3. Agrees with the IPM doctrinal position and policy statement
  4. A sense of God's leading into interim ministry
  5. An awareness of the importance of transition times in local church
  6. Favorable references (recommended by District Leadership, if in a denomination, or Organizational Leadership)
  7. A willingness to participate in interim ministry training
  8. A desire to see churches grow in health and effectiveness
  9. A desire to help prepare a local church for it's new pastor
  10. A minimum of 15 years pastoral experience or equivalent
  11. Has reached the age of 62 - if under the age of 65, the applicant must be able to support himself (and his family) financially between interim ministries. IPM cannot guarantee placement. (Exceptions to be approved by the IPM Executive Director.)

Key Qualities for Today's Interim Pastor

  1. Spiritual maturity
  2. Wisdom to understand issues, discern source of problems, recommend solutions
  3. Love for God and love for people
  4. Growing both spiritually and in ministry skills
  5. Sense of call to interim ministry
  6. Desire to assist in the development of a healthy church
  7. Possessing basic ministry skills in problem solving, leadership development, conflict resolution
  8. A person of initiative and energy
  9. Possessing a desire to use latter years of life in pastoral ministry
  10. Models wise financial stewardship

Skills Needed for an Effective Interim Ministry

The Interim Pastor needs to be able to:

  1. Capably fulfill pastoral ministry responsibilities
  2. Ask probing questions
  3. Listen carefully and objectively
  4. Evaluate cautiously
  5. Build relationships with the leadership and congregation
  6. Be flexible in approach to ministry
  7. Provide leadership that is both wise and practical
  8. Design and implement a plan and strategy for the local church
  9. Evaluate the plan and the results
  10. Disciple and train church leaders

The IPM Membership Process

Upon request, we will send the IPM Information Packet, including:

  1. IPM Policies
  2. A resume format and a request for a resume according to our format
  3. Send an application, if acceptable, for IPM ministry minimum standards

After an application is received and accepted, IPM will:

  1. Request two sermons (audio or video)
  2. Check references
  3. Check with the district leader, if in a denomination
  4. Check with an organizational leader, if an organizational member, i.e., Wycliffe
  5. Determine date of availability - willingness to relocate
  6. Receive a signed Acceptance of Policies Statement
  7. Receive a signed Housing Allowance Request Form
  8. Send a completed packet to the IPM Executive Director
  9. The Executive Director forwards the resume and summary of references to the IPM board for approval

After Board Approval of an membership application, the IPM Executive Director:

  1. Sends an IPM Welcome Letter
  2. Requests a picture of the pastor and his wife (digital, if possible)
  3. Sends an IPM Membership Certificate
